Stockyard Channing was born Susan Williams Antonia Stockard on the 13th of February, 1944 in New York City, United States. He was born to his parents, Lester Napier and Mary Alice. His father owned a shipping business that died in 1960. He has a sister named Lesly Stockard Smith, who served as mayor of Palm Beach, Florida.
About his education, he studied at Madeira School based in McLean, Virginia. He attended Chaplin School. Later, he studied at Radcliffe College at Harvard University, where he obtained a degree in history and literature. After graduating in 1965, he began training as an acting director at HB Studio in New York City.
