Early life

Larry Elder was born on April 27th, 1952 in Los Angeles, California, United States. He spent his childhood growing up in Pico-Union and in the South Central. Elder’s father, Randolph has served as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. His family moved to California during the second Great Depression.

Larry lost his father in 2011, and was raised by his mother, Viola, and his two brothers. His mother had served as secretary of the U.S. Army during World War II.

To study, he joined Crenshaw High School, where he graduated in 1970. He then studied at Brown University. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the University in 1974. In 1977, he received a J. D. from the University of Michigan Law School.

The elder began working for the Cleveland law firm, Squire, Sanders & Dempsey after graduating. Then, he founded a law firm of law enforcement, Laurence A. Elder and Associates in 1980. He worked for the company until 1987. Although he resigned from the company, he remained the owner until 1995.

Larry began co-hosting a theme TV program, Fabric in 1988. The TV program was broadcast on PBS member station, WVIZ. He then worked as the manager of a PBS program called National Desk in 1997.
