Kameny was born on May 21, 1925, New York City to Ashkenazi Jewish parents. He attended Richmond Hill High School and then went on to Queens College where he studied physics. He enlisted in the US Army before completing his studies. He served in the Armed Forces during World War II and later returned to Queens College where he graduated in 1948.
Kameny then enrolled at Harvard University where he did both master’s and doctoral degrees in astronomy.
