Like other companies, the Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) is working on a supersonic train project. Objective: to travel by train at more than 1,000 km / h. And obviously, everything is going as planned.

Do a thousand kilometers in an hour? The Hyperloop would be able to do that. Conceptualized at the beginning of the 20th century, the idea was brought up to date by Elon Musk in 2013. He then proposed the technical bases of this new means of transport. If the founder of Tesla and SpaceX is developing his own transport system through the company The Boring Company, he has also placed the project in open-source to leave the door open to other companies.

Since then, projects have multiplied. Companies, such as the American Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT or HTT), the Canadian TransPod (which also establishes its districts in France), where again Virgin Hyperloop are in particular in the race. The latter has also just offered the first manned test of its very high-speed transport technology. During this test, two passengers successfully “traveled” at 327 km / h for approximately 500 meters. The pod has therefore not reached the theoretical maximum speed of the Hyperloop, but Virgin hopes to do so soon.

However, they are not the only ones. Since 2017, the Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) has also been developing its own supersonic train project called “Hyper-tube”, a sort of South Korean version of the Hyperloop. The goal announced three years ago was to create a system capable of going twice as fast as magnetic levitation (maglev) trains, which can currently travel at around 500 km / h.

The first results of this project have been announced. Recently, the Institute would have thus propelled a test model to 1019 km / h at a pressure level of 0.001 – which is akin to the pressure of a vacuum. Note that this was only a 1/17 scale model here. The KRRI plans a first full- size functional test by 2022. If all goes according to plan, then South Korea could launch its large Hyper-tube network by 2024, reducing the travel time between Seoul and Busan from three hours to around 30 minutes.

“Many countries like the United States, Canada, and China are competing to take the lead in this futuristic technology. We will try to get ahead of these main global rivals, ” a KRRI official said in a statement, making his ambitions clear.

Whether it is this project or another, a priori, we will have to wait a few more years before we can take advantage of this exciting new technology.
