Telefónica has anticipated all predictions and today has become the second operator in Spain to offer 5G . In this way, it is ahead of Orange and affirms that, according to its estimates, 75% of the Spanish population will be able to access this technology before the end of this year. The announcement was made by the CEO of Telefónica, José María Álvarez-Pallete, who highlighted that the launch of the 5G network “is a leap forward towards hyperconnectivity that will change the future of Spain”: “They arrive huge benefits. 5G is not only a new generation of mobile telephony, it is a revolution due to its practical applications for all sectors and because it allows the expansion of ultra-broadband coverage in rural areas and in emptied Spain”.

5G is the fifth generation of the mobile network, understanding as such each of the stages that have occurred in mobile telephony since its emergence. Thus, each one has had its own characteristics. First appeared the analog 1G, which only allowed talking on the phone; 2G and SMS happened to him; 3G provided mobile internet, while with 4G came mobile broadband, which allowed the viewing of live videos or virtual reality.

This change will multiply the speed of mobile communications to reach peaks of 1 to 10 Gbps, more than what fiber optics currently offers. This will serve, for example, to download a series on the mobile in seconds . You will also achieve a reduction in latency, that is, the response time of the network from when an instruction is given to a device until it reacts. Improvements to the 4G network have lowered that time to 30 milliseconds, but 5G will take it to the environment of 1 to 5 milliseconds , practically in real time. This improvement is key in use cases such as autonomous driving or surgical operations carried out remotely.

However, the reality is that not all smartphones will be able to support it . Only some of those already on the market and those to come will benefit from its advantages. These are the 5G phones available at the moment:
