A study published this Friday by a group of Brazilian scientists concluded that azithromycin is ineffective in treating seriously ill patients with coronavirus.
The clinical trial, carried out in 57 Brazilian hospitals and published in the scientific journal The Lancet, revealed that azithromycin, the second most used drug in the world against coronavirus, does not improve the clinical evolution of seriously ill patients with COVID-19.
“The study suggests that azithromycin is ineffective for treating the virus, at least for seriously ill patients, but it is good to remember that it is recommended for pneumonia caused by bacteria,” said Remo Holland Furtado, a cardiologist at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, to Efe.
